Baa Baa Smart Sheep

A Fun Interactive Children's Story

About this Story

"Original, witty and mischievous"

If your kids love books like The Book with No Pictures or Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, they’ll probably crack up over Baa Baa Smart Sheep (or Baaa… Baaa…—whichever spelling your local library uses, I’ve seen it both ways!). Created by husband-wife duo Mark and Rowan Sommerset, this cheeky story stars a sheep who’s sooo bored one afternoon that he decides to prank a gullible turkey. Using what he claims are “genius pills” (spoiler: they’re just dried sheep poop), the sheep reels in his target with straight-faced humor that’s pure gold for both kids and parents.

Since winning New Zealand’s Children’s Choice Award, the book’s been translated into over a dozen languages—though the humor feels universal. Rowan’s minimalist cartoon drawings, kind of similar to Mo Willems’ style but with more woolly charm, make every awkward pause and sly grin pop. Some parents say their kids start giggling before the story even kicks into gear, just from the sheep’s overly innocent expression.

Fun fact: The authors admit they’ve debated whether the turkey should’ve been smarter. But hey, half the fun is watching that poor bird fall for the trick every. Single. Time. Critics call it a “reverse Boy Who Cried Wolf” with extra silliness. Pair it with Click, Clack, Moo or Jon Klassen’s hat trilogy for a laugh-out-loud storytime.

Small warning: Be ready for “smarty tablets” jokes at dinner. Lots of ‘em. Kids never tire of pretending to munch sheep droppings, strangely enough.
